Exploring Hong Kong’s Geological Wonders: Geography Workshops & Sai Kung Field Trip

The Geography Panel recently organised an enriching post-exam learning experience for Forms 4 and 5 students, with Form 3 students also invited to participate. The programme included interactive workshops on minerals and rocks, followed by a field trip to Sai Kung to study the Early Cretaceous rhyolitic columnar rock formation—a globally recognised geological marvel.

Selected as one of the First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites in 2022, this iconic formation highlights Hong Kong’s unique geological significance on the world stage. Students explored coastal landscapes and geological processes, bridging classroom theories with real-world observations.

The Geopark-School Programme, supported by Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, provided invaluable insights. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with students appreciating the hands-on learning and awe-inspiring natural wonders.

This cross-form initiative not only deepened geographical knowledge but also fostered a greater appreciation for Hong Kong’s geological heritage. We look forward to continuing such immersive experiences!
